Brain-Wide Synaptic Connectome Mapped in Unprecedented Resolution by International Neuroscientists

Neuroscience has reached a milestone comparable to the sequencing of the human genome. An international consortium of researchers has published the complete synaptic-resolution wiring diagram of a mammalian cortical column, revealing structural wiring principles that challenge longstanding dogmas.

Reconstructing Petabytes of Neural Tissue

The project sliced neural tissue into 30-nanometer sections, imaged them via automated electron microscopes, and deployed computer vision neural networks to trace axonal pathways and catalog over 150 million individual synapses.
