Watch: 4K Supercomputer Simulation Visualizes Matter Falling into a Supermassive Black Hole

Astrophysicists have released the most computationally intensive visual simulation of a spinning Kerr black hole ever produced. Using general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) code, the video models the chaotic accretion disk of ionized gas orbiting at 90% the speed of light.

The visual breakdown illustrates how the extreme curvature of spacetime bends light rays from the far side of the accretion disk over and under the black hole, creating the characteristic glowing double-halo observed by the Event Horizon Telescope.
